Commentary
Early Chinese embellished bottles are relatively rare ,despite the regular references to them in the imperial archives related to the palace workshops at Beijing from the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods. Among those that have survived is a small group of wares embellished with mother-of-pearl in a simple ,folk-art style that we have previously considered to be mid-Qing. This bottle seems to suggest that even if they began in the Qianlong reign ,however ,they were still being made into the Daoguang ,since this subject is generally (and possibly accurately) associated with the Daoguang emperor.
The basic bottle here is obviously of some age and considerably older than the embellishing; the pattern of natural wear that covers the surface goes beneath the embellishment. It was used extensively before being decorated ,then ,and since we can date the decoration to the Daoguang period with some confidence ,there is every reason to believe that the bottle is from earlier in the dynasty. This colour of blue glass seems to have been in early use at the palace. It is an uncarved overlay of the type known as sutao. It has the two layers of colour—a paler ,milkier blue overlaid with a darker colour—typical of the eighteenth century. Whenever the glass bottle was made ,however ,the work as we have it now was decorated for the Daoguang emperor ,or so we may assume. (See Sale 2 ,lot 50 ,where others of the subject are cited in various media; and Treasury 6 ,no. 1327.)
This type of work is ,of course ,fragile and susceptible to damage; this one is in astonishingly good condition ,the only minor problem being that one ring on the mask handles has a tiny dislodged segment glued back in slightly the wrong position ,giving it an odd shape for a hanging ring.
For a magnificent early embellished glass snuff bottle that is of Chinese workmanship ,see White 1990 ,plate 70 ,no. 2. For two embellished amber snuff bottles in the imperial collection ,both early but simple in style and design ,see Chang 1991a ,nos. 390 and 391. For three others ,see Ford 1982,no. 138 ,also with mother-of-pearl on blue glass with mask-and-ring handles ,closely related to the present example; no. 143 ,also closely related ,but with other materials in addition to mother-of-pearl; and no. 141 ,of the same broad group but without the mother-of-pearl. Another in mother-of-pearl on an old moss-agate snuff bottle was in the Edmund Dwyer Collection (Christie’s ,London ,12 October 1987 ,lot 195; and JICSBS ,Summer 1984 ,front cover). Two more ,both on blue glass and with mask handles ,and both in mother-of-pearl only ,are in Geng and Zhao 1992 ,nos. 101 and 102.
