The design of two or more layers of differently colored overlay is achieved by placing splashes of differing color on the body and then carving as appropriate. One theory is that the double overlay technique matured during the Daoguang period ,on the basis of the close similarity of the designs to those found on porcelains of the period. As repeated colors and designs became familiar ,greater complexity was required in order to continue to stimulate interest. Robert Kleiner ,Chinese Snuff Bottles p. 26-27.
